Salary range: GBP24,589 to GBP30,995 pa depending on experience.

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and technically skilled Advanced Research Assistant to cover maternity leave. The successful candidate will carry out both routine and more bespoke laboratory protocols and procedures.

Our primary research interest involves using animal models to understand rare genetics disease in humans. We are working on a 5 year project to characterise mouse models of developmental disorders such as intellectual disability and autism, and examine the treatability of these disorders. The applicant's role will be to provide technical research support for different aspects of this project. The role spans various molecular and cellular techniques, including human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell culture, massively parallel reporter assays, CRISPR-A experiments, and chromatin accessibility assays. There will be varying levels of involvement with molecular and histological characterisation of mouse models of disease, cognitive testing of mice, and cell culture of mutant lines, depending on workload and skills. On the job training will be provided in areas where needed.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator to keep both the team and senior staff fully apprised of progress; they will be expected to take a collaborative and pragmatic approach when planning the work schedules in order to prioritise effectively.



Essential Skills

  • BSc in Genetics/Physiology/Anatomy or equivalent significant experience in a relevant area
  • Significant understanding of molecular genetics
  • Understanding and significant previous experience in molecular biology techniques including Cloning, PCR, qPCR, RNA isolation, and library construction
  • Experience using cell culture techniques
  • Experience with statistical packages, data visualisation tools, and other bioinformatic analysis resources
  • Ability to work independently, and show initiative to resolve issues arising
  • Adaptability to changing priorities & workloads, and willingness to learn new skills
  • Good manual dexterity & attention to detail
  • High level of computer literacy
  • Good communication skills
  • Team oriented approach


Ideal Skills

  • Experience in microscopy, tissue dissection, processing, and histology
  • Recent or Current Home Office Personal License for mouse work
  • Experience of handling and phenotyping mice
  • Experience of planning and/or conducting experiments using animal models
  • Experience of planning and/or conducting mouse behavioural experiments with emphasis on cognitive and/or neurological function
  • Willingness to work with mouse models
